Artwork Spotlight: Boaz Noy ‘Sculpture Garden’

I created this piece following a visit to one of my favorite places in Israel – The Israel Museum’s sculpture garden. I love the monumental scale and the unique balance between the sculptures and the garden itself, between the art and the world surrounding it.

I went on a mission to give my painting monumental aspects. In doing so, I reflected on a marvelous painting from the museum’s permanent collection by Uri Lesser. I searched for a spot under the large Jerusalem pines. Lesser’s sharp European shadow-light contrast still fresh in my mind, was replaced by Jerusalem’s blinding desert light.

On the far left I created abstract figures of my kids climbing on top of the basalt terrace. When looking back at photos I had taken of the spot, I was surprised they revealed a figure I hadn’t noticed, of a man sitting on a bench, observing the scene. (On the right side at the lower part of the tree trunk).

It was only after completing the painting, that I had discovered at least four more unintentional figures taking their places in my imaginary sculpture garden.
