Andres Gurwicz

Andres Gurwicz (b. 1989, Argentina, immigrated to Israel in 2001) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Tel Aviv.

Primarily known for his innovative approach to painting, Gurwicz has developed a unique technique using Indian ink markers on paper. His process begins with the collection of images from a variety of sources - from his own photographs to to images collected by NASA in space. He then digitally edits them to create his compositions. Once finalized, he meticulously recreates his newly constructed images on paper, using rhythmic, sisyphean mark-making that balances abstraction with representational detail. His works often blend figurative elements with intricate, meditative patterns, inviting multiple interpretations, from the symbolic to the realistic.

Central to Gurwicz's practice are themes of observation and ritual: adaptation, contemplation, reflection, listening, and consumption. These ideas manifest both in the content of his works and in the meditative process through which they are created.

“Foreignness” is another key motif in his work, exploring the tension between the familiar and the unfamiliar. For instance, his semi-monochromatic Martian landscapes evoke the alienation of uninhabited spaces, while his Bougainvillea series uses the plant indigenous to Israel, as a symbol of his personal journey and adaptation to his new Mediterranean surroundings.

In addition to his artistic practice, Gurwicz is a dedicated educator. He teaches at Haifa University's School of the Arts, as well as at Muzot High School of Arts, and runs his own drawing school - Maadim Studio in Tel Aviv.
